Special Collections

The collections on Ar n Àite bring together selected historic materials from the Western Isles Library Service, offering a place‑based view of island life as recorded through print, image, and language. Drawn primarily from library holdings—and complemented by contributions from local partners—these items reflect the everyday reading culture of the Outer Hebrides, from pamphlets and photographs to maps and local publications.

Rooted in the lived experience of the islands, the collections invite readers to explore connections between place, Gaelic language, and memory, and to encounter materials that can also be found in local libraries, here shared more widely to support access, curiosity, and connection.
